Does anybody know of a good source for wood, both domestics & exotics close to Connecticut. I would like to be able to drive there to be able to pick my boards.

Hi,
Check out Harris Enterprises in Manchester. They have a great selection and good service. Look at http://www.harrisent.com.

What part of the state are you in?

Actually I live outside Toronto Canada but am trying to find out for a friend that lives in Trundell.
Maybe you mean Trumbull, Ct. Harris is ok but for the best selection and prices, drive a little further to Condon(no not condom) Lumber in Stormville, NY. Go on I84 west into NY, It may be 90 min from Trumbull and definitely worth the drive. The selection is voluminous.
Your friend should check out Conway's Hardwood Products in Gaysville, Ct. It is on Route 7, in the western part of the state just north of New Milford. They have mostly domestic hardwoods, but also have a good selection of mahogany and ipe.
The staff is excellent, the inventory is large, and the prices are good. The lumber is stacked in an old supermarket, the space is warm and well lit which makes searching for the perfect board a pleasure.

If your friend lives in Trumbull, then Kellogg is a good choice. I am in the next town north of Trumbull (Monroe) and Bethel, where Kellogg is, is not that far away.
John
Try Kellogg Hardwoods in Bethel.

I live in central Massachusetts and travel to a supplier called CWG (Connecticut Wood Group) Hardwood Outlet, 18 Mullen Road, Enfield,Ct. They have a web site; http://www.cwghardwoodoutlet.com. They are very helpful and friendly. They have a great selection and are competatively priced.
I highly recommend them. Give them a visit, you'll be happy you did. Happy hunting. Make plenty of sawdust ! BigChip
