I used to do some amateur woodworking as a kid using my dads tools, but after growing up and moving out I haven’t gotten to do anything with wood in over a decade 🙁

Well, I finally bit the bullet and got myself a simple shop setup in my garage and got to do my first project in a very long time! I forgot how relaxing this all is (until it all goes wrong… lol).

This is a simple box made out of some 3/4 x 3 1/2 inch walnut planks I got from Home Depot. I did the inlay work with a laser etcher I DIYed then inlayed sterling silver and jet stone into the wood along with a wood veneer I had from a sample pack, no idea what wood that is, I just liked the way it looked against walnut. I’ll be making an updated version using bubinga with bloodwood accents that is looking to be a really nice combination.

One issue that I’ve run into and could use some advice on is the holes I have to drill for the magnets in the corners. They’re a countersunk magnet so I need to drill a 3/8 hole 1/8 deep, followed by a 1/4 inch deep pilot hole for the screw centered in the larger hole. I’ve looked at countersunk drill bits but they all have 2 issues.
     1) The smaller drill bit is always very long, much longer than 1/4 inch and would drill through my box long before the countersink is 1/8 deep.
     2) The bits all have a fairly steep angle to the countersink, while the magnets have a flat bottom, so I need as close to a flat bottom as I can get.

I’ve been resorting to just eyeballing it and clamping everything down to get “close enough” but I’d love to have it perfect.
