John,
I am considering purchasing a larger jointer and planer for my shop. I was thinking of buying a combination machine because it would take up less room, but I am concerned that if a problem develops, I would not be able to use both the jointer and planer rather than one or the other. Is this a legitimate concern?

Jim,
Combination machines use a single cutter head and feed roller assembly for both jointing and planing and these are the only moving parts other than the motor and drive belt. If the cutter head or the drive system has problems the machine won't work as either a jointer or a planer. That said, the cutter and drive are typically simple robust components and should be reliable and trouble free if the maker took reasonable care in their design and manufacture.
The switch over from one function to the other just involves swinging the tables and the dust shroud to different positions, there is nothing that would ever be likely to break.

Thanks, John.
