I am trying to color a hard maple bookcase with medium dark mahogany. That is what my friend wants!! I used all kind of dyes but it covers the beautiful figures that maple offers. I read books and research your web side but no matter what I do the results are the same. Knowing the dense hard maple with very small grain it makes it difficult to achieve what I am trying to do. There is a book “Understanding Wood Finishing” that shows a hard maple with dark color and the figure are very visible and the author suggested using “W. D. Lockwood Water Based Transparent “. That also covered the figures. Any suggestion, thanks in advance.

If you haven't tried using a dye yet, you will be pleasantly surprised.
Dyes are always transparent. They will give you color but not obscure the grain or markings.
Get a sample pack or two for experimenting and you'll see what I mean.
Sorry for the delay. I'm on the road.
