Howdy!
I recently purchased a few old wooden planes. What’s the best way to remove the grime and not the patina? Also, I just had my hand saws sharpened and now I want to remove the rust and keep it from coming back. I’ve heard of using WD-40, (which can stain the handle), tung oil and car wax. What’s the best?

babba,
Try a search of the archives, this very subject has been discussed numerous times and there is loads of good info in there.
I personally use Naval Jelly to remove rust, then some sort of oil to protect the metal, but there are a lot of other ways too.
Don't know what to tell you with the planes, though I'd recommend putting them to use, but I probably couldn't resist making curlies with a mint #1 either. Good luck!
