What’s a high(er) quality general purpose blade for a 7.25″ circular saw?
To wit: we know Freud makes great blades, but would one choose their 40 tooth blade for general use? Would you buy the Freud for $20 or would you buy a 24 tooth DeWalt for $12?

What kind of cutting are you doing? I use an Oldham 60 tooth carbide blade with a saw guide to rip plywood for cabinets. For rough framing, I'll switch to a 24 tooth carbide blade.
With circular saws, I think it's as much about the condition of the saw as the quality (i.e $$$) of the blade. An old saw with worn bearings isn't going to give you a clean cut with even the most expensive blade.
It's acutally intended as a (small) gift for my brother who recently bought his first house, a handyman's dream. Thus, I'm assuming he'd need it for a variety of applications.
Ahhh, ok. You could go with either of the blades you originally asked about and I would suggest the $12 blade. That combination should work just fine for most cutting and he can always get better blades as his needs change.
Make sure you give him the link to this website, too. That would be "the gift that keeps on giving" - lol
If the blade is to be used to remodel a house, I would get an inexpensive blade. Maybe get him a few Oldham (pardon the sp) blades as a starter pack. I remember my first house. Used the old skill saw and cut through just about anything. Threw the cheap blades away and used 3 or 4 before I got to the cost of a good blade.
If he's going to be remodeling, Oldham makes a nail-cutting blade:

'came in real handy when I was removing my old siding. 'may want to get him one of these, together with the 24-tooth carbide GP blade.
I saw those nail cutting blades while surf-shopping. That's not a bad idea at all, to get him one of each. Thanks.
freud Diablo is THE BEST..it's red. Really, the best.

What's it for? I've got a Forrest WWII on mine that I use for breaking down sheetgoods. @65.00
I will second that. Best blades I ever used. I cut ply with mine and you get a glue ready edge. I would not want to use it for framing and general repair work though.
