does anyone have any expereince in building hollow chunky shelves. Generally/ average 2.5 inch thick. I’ve built hollow shelves simply by face joining 0.25 inch plywood but was never too happy with the edges given you can see the plyed layers. I was thinking a 45 degree locking miter bit. But can I use it to create a hollow retangle closed on all sides? Any advice would be great. Thanks

You can easily create shelves like that by building them as torsion boxes. Pick your materials depending on the span and load they need to carry, but typically 1/2" or 3/4" ply will make incredibly strong shelving when glued up over the hollow frame. At the same time you are gluing up the box you can, by recessing the spacers on the sides, create recesses in the shelves that will allow blind support afterwards. The face frame piece on the shelf front can be simply glued on, or use biscuits if you want. No need at all for any fancy joinery.
Do you want these shelves to appear hollow or are they hollow to save on material?
