I recently bought a Jet Mini Lathe so my 12 year old son could make pens. He has shop in 7th grade and they made pens in class, and he liked it so much that he wanted to continue at home. Well, he has been busy and we now will never run out of pens….
I would like to learn how to turn bowls and so I will need to buy a chuck for this lathe. Does anyone have any advice on which chuck I should get (or stay away from)? I bought the lathe at Woodcraft here in Richmond, and am wondering if I should get what they sell (Nova brand), or get another type.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

I have the nova chuck and it works very well. Though the super nova with keyed chuck would be a bit more convenient.

Doug,
I've got the Nova G3. It's a very good chuck for a smaller lathe at an excellent price. It's not so good if you intend to turn monster bowls (beyond the capability of your lathe). I'd recommend getting the smallest set of bowl jaws as well, but you can use the basic jaws for a lot.
