I’ve been asked to build a desk for my 6 year old niece for Christmas. A standard adult desk is about 30″ which would be way too high for her. How high should the work surface be?

You know what is just as important as a custom-sized desk? A custom-sized chair! The seat from front to back needs to be short enough so she can sit upright against the backrest and still bend her knees 90 degrees. It also needs to be low enough so her feet (in shoes) rest flat on the floor. If the seat is too deep or high, it interferes with circulation in the legs, resulting in a case of the Fidgets.0
The work surface for a computer desk needs to be lower than for a writing desk, so she can type with her upper arms perpendicular to the floor and the forearms parallel to the floor. The monitor needs to be slightly below eye level.
Writing requires a higher work surface, but it's hard to be specific without looking at my notes from an Ergonomics course. They could be anywhere....
But how about this: Ask her parents to go to your niece's classroom (isn't Open House Night coming up soon?) and measure her desk and chair. That ought to fit the majority of six-year-olds.
