Was wondering what you think of a cherry box w/ walnut trim and a walnut box w/ cherry trim as a contrast to each other. I know cherry darkens w/ age and walnut lightens but don’t have any long term experience to know how they’ll look 10 years from now.

TJ,
The two woods go nicely if done right the contrast will continue to show . It is a more subtle contrast . You could stain the box with a Provincial color and top coat to make the contrast even more vivid in some cases .
If your Cherry is more light in color and a darker Walnut that will be nice also , selecting the right boards may be the trick.
have fun dusty
The change in color will not necessarily go on forever. The cherry will darken within a few weeks or months. The walnut will not get lighter unless it is in direct UV or sunlight. I have a walnut piece made many years ago and the back of the cabinet was facing a window. It got bleached out. Other cherry pieces darkened in the first couple of months or so and then have stabilized.
Go for it!!! These 2 woods are ham and eggs. I get soooo many compliments on the stuff I've done with this mix.
Also check out mfg's of checkerboards. It might give ya some new ideas ya like. But ,for my money, walnut and cherry are superb!
They can go together nicely, but just be aware that they often end up a very similar colour. There is a bit more red in the cherry after a year, while the walnut has a bit more brown, but if you look at them quickly they look surprisingly similar.
