I need some help on how to take out/remove the burn marks on a cherry drawers – actually there 8 drawers. I was putting a 1/2″ cove cut on the inside of the drawer front to give the drawer a little relief and when I tried to sand out the burn marks, it didn’t work so well.
Any one have a suggestion?
thanks

Perhaps you could buy a fresh (sharp) bit and run the coves cuts again - set to remove only a hair more material, but this time, run them at an even steady pace (no hesitations starts and stops) so the bit can't linger any where and rub/burn.
Cherry is tricky to keep from burning with power tools.
A scraper might be another alternative.
For next time, a Stanley 66 or molding plane might also be worth checking out.
Thanks Samson - I have the heaviest burn at the point of entry which I make about 2" from the edge of the drawer. It would be a tricky cut there, but the other burn marks I'll give it a try on. thanks again

I agree with Samson, cherry is really tricky and that you must keep the bit moving. Rather than "entering" at the ends, you might try starting in the middle of the run and exiting quickly at the ends (practicing on some scrap first). You may be able to remove the burn marks using your current bit this way...
Good luck!
joe ,
Sounds like you are making a start and stop cut for a finger well ,
well ,,, several things when we tend to go slow at first and near the end again the burn will occur Cherry as noted is worse than others but the good side is that imo Cherry burn is easier to get rid of then others as well .
So if you are using a router and a cove bit try a router table with stops or marks for a guide . The shape of the cove I use is actually different then the one for the finger pull . The normal cove router bit has a tendency to rip and tear at the ends of a stop cut but the panel back cutter I use on a shaper has a curve more like a miniature raised panel knife and can still burn but rips less .
When I run the coves you sort of get into a rhythm and spend little time in one place , keep moving .
hope this helps some dusty
Hey Dovetailjoe,
Something I picked up from FWW is to use the router bit itself as a scraper to clean up burns. Doesn't always work but at least the profile is already right on.
