If you are near central Iowa there is a great sawmill west of Fort Dodge (2 miles east of Somers). It is run by Morri Risa, a great guy. He sells a quality product at a fair price. He doesn’t have a huge inventory so you should call ahead to see if he has what you are looking for. I was there the other day and bought some highly figured red oak and highly figured black walnut. He doesn’t always have these figured woods in stock but when he does they are cheap compared to what I pay in Montana. I have listed his website below, he can also be found on woodfinder.com.

By the way I don’t work for Morrri, I am just trying to help out a saw 2 man operation.

Thanks!
In return, are you familiar with the lumber/saw mill in Ogden? It used to be called Buttermores but has changed hands once or twice and I am not sure of the name now.

Odgen, Iowa I assume.
I am not heard of Buttermores, if you have anymore info. I would be interested. Prices?
Thanks
Fence line to fence line
We sold the family farm some in Humboldt, some 30 miles to north of Somers. What struck me standing on the land was the absence of trees along the fence lines I remembered from my youth. Farm buildings and the trees surrounding them are disappearing too as people move to town to get the property taxes lowered on the agricultural land. Driving there I was struck by the lack of trees. They seem to no longer serve a purpose in the business of agriculture. The minute the land changed hands the fence was taken down between adjoining quarter sections so the equipment could make mile long passes over the land. The land in this part of Iowa is triple A rated farm land. It is not the kind of place one plants trees.
Yes, I know there still are places like the banks of the Skunk, Des Moines, Cedar and Upper Iowa filled with trees, but those places that grew a lot of those trees finding its way to lumber, seems to be vanishing. But perhaps the romance of memory is failing me again.
