I could use some suggestions for working on top of an old shake roof.
The shakes are dry and presumably fairly brittle.
I am installing a new window in the Gable end, and must be on the roof ( 6/12 pitch )of the attached Garage to install the window and patch the siding back in.
Some ideas for limiting the damage to the roof would be appreciated.
Thanks

My first choice would be to rent a man lift, and stay completely off the roof. In some cases a ladder with a roof hook can be used. It's more difficult to meet fall protection rules with the ladder but it's often necessary if you have to work close to the existing roof line. You have to be very careful not to put much foot weight on the old shingles.
