Hubby has asked me to put his Mitutoyo 2-3″ micrometer on Craig’s List. I notice the current ones have “carbide measuring faces.” Does anyone know (a) how long this has been a feature or (b) if there’s an easy way to tell if this set has the same.
This is an auction-buy, been in the drawer for quite awhile, and I have no idea how old it is. It comes in a wood case, rather than plastic, and was made in Brazil. The model number is the same as the current one, 103-217.
TIA!

Ooops, never mind, found the info in extreeeeemly fine print. Sorry.
They use microprinting on micrometers, ya know. ;-)
"They use microprinting on micrometers, ya know." Big ROFL!!! That brightened up an otherwise dreary day, Ralph!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I know. You have the info you need.
Just had to chime in. I have a digital Mitutoyo that I have had for about twenty years and it definitely has carbide measuring faces. bought new/plastic box.
Secondly : made in Brazil ? ? ? BRAZIL ? ? ? now I am depressed.
Samba yes; I love my João Gilberto, Antônio Carlos Jobim and others . . .
Precision tooling nah dude nah.
Japan is, in the modern day, synonymous with high quality manufacturing. Over all consistent quality some what better even than my Sarretts.
OK I got it out. Carry on.

Sao Paulo, Brazil, it says on the little folder inside. There doesn't seem to be much "Made in Japan" these days compared to 20th C., broadly speaking (decorative items, toys, in addition to tools, for example. Another item I threw on Craig's List was a Makita finishing sander, new in the box, made in Japan. Had an Ernst Hardware sticker on it, they've not been in business for 12-13 years in the Seattle area. (Started in Seattle 1893, wow, didn't know that until tonight).
Have any guesses when Mitutoyo switched to plastic case? More than 20 years ago, based on your purchase. Perhaps the 1970's?? forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

Perhaps the 1970's?? <I believe that in the catalog there was an option to get a wood case for a few bucks more or the plastic if the customer was not going to use a box and just put the tool straight into a larger tool box with drawers etc. Here is a quote from the PDF catalog page B2:http://www.mitutoyo.com/pdf/B.pdf•Auto power ON/OFF function.

150mm/6", Wooden box over 150mm/6"From this it looks like now the 6" and smaller come in plastic and the larger than 6" come in a wood box. I swear when I last looked there was a choice on all and one payed more for wood box.rocGive me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. I hate it when the catalogs rewrite themselves like that. Same with the price stickers in the grocery store. I walk by -- "Buy one, get one free!" -- so I pick out two. They ring up at regular price, go back to look again, the tag has re-written itself "Buy three, get one free!" "Big freakin' deal," I say.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I said things are changing tooooo fast for me but sounds like things are changing even faster for you. Same day ! What's next, labels rewriting themselves as you look on like the latest stock prices on Wall Street? ? ?I am sure of the box option back in the day but haven't even looked at that in a decade. The store I used to buy these from here closed their branch in my town and now only have a Denver store. I always talked with Loretta the whole time, the smart one of the out fit, from ~1982 until a few years ago when they packed up.I suppose next it will be somebody on the phone in India who has never held a micrometer in their hand in their lives that I will be ordering from. Some one with such a heavy accent I feel like I should be bare foot and bringing them an offering of flowers and oranges. Rocky,
"I have a digital Mitutoyo that I have had for about twenty years and it definitely has carbide measuring faces. bought new/plastic box."
I think any good quality instrument will have carbide anvils.
Depressed about "made in Brazil" ? Why? Honda Gold Wings are made in USA and so are BMW Z sports cars.....(Let us not go down there).
I bought a Mitutoyo micrometer recently-very much made in Japan, so take heart. I am pandering to your love of these things so here it is-with a modified knob I made for it when trying out a concave knurl.Philip Marcou
> Brazil" ? Why? Honda Gold Wings are made in USA and so are BMW Z sports cars.....(Let us not go down there). You lost me there dear reader . . . ?Hey thanks for pandering. Nice knurl.Sorry to be so "prejudice" pretty much my only exposure to Brazil and it's people has been the latest news and one guy who was here at the Olympic training center for speed skating. Had legs the size of my waste. He always would come in with big smiles, slap me on the back and say HELLO ROC ! THE CRAZY BRAZILIAN ! HE IS BACK ! HOW'S IT GOING ! ! !( only with a little more volume than that ) talking about his latest adventures, mostly involving extremely attractive and athletic women. One story I heard goes that he was standing on one leg in a white water river with a bolder on his head doing one legged squats while the rest of the party ( all female ) looked on. And I do use the word party less in the sense of older folks on an outing to see the hills and dales and more toward the " hey mate better call the police they have set fire to another building after they raided the liqueur locker" variety. Then there are the drug wars busting out in the streets every week in Brazil. But what do I know . . . ( wrinkles brow and looks worried and forces a faltering attempt at turning it into a look of optimism ) . . . I haven't actually toured one of their precision ( snicker ) manufacturing plants.( : }That is where all the latest satellites are being manufactured right ? Oh wait it is Europehttp://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8331962.stmAnd the early pioneer and leader in robotics ? Brazil right ? Oops USA and Japanhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_robot#History_of_industrial_roboticsWell they must have made something down there . . .Oh yah great music, party animals and gun wielding rude boys. All in good fun. I admit you are much more worldly and in the know than I am. I am here in Wild, Wild, West USA. There is world class research going on about two hundred miles from here in Boulder but I am not too up on all that. Much of it environmental.rocGive me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. Good point. Sorry I did say I love the music. Top shelf. Maybe a few lincs to what is going on in the real world in Brazil would put right my limited rantings.rocGive me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. Abraham Lincoln ( 54° shaves )
Being a fan of the PBR bull riding events, I cheer for the Brazilian riders. They are dedicated and determined, and put on a great show! Great for the PBR. Here's one of my faves, Guilherme Marchi, 2008 World Champion, pic from his website.

Great sport, if you bounce well LOL. Those guys ride hurt all the time, nothin' like having a 2000# bull plant a hoof on your arm, leg or midsection to just make your day.
Championships going on right now, final day will be on NBC, but the build-up is on Versus Fri/Sat/Sun.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Philip, Honda Gold Wings are no longer made in the USA. Last year Honda moved the Gold Wing production from Marysville, OH, 30 miles from me, back to Japan. The plant was converted from motorcycles to cars. The car plant was already next to the motorcycle plant and they needed more car production. I used to own 1983 and 1991 Wings, it was a sad day to see the motorcycle plant go.

Long time ago I was moving a friend from Sask to BC. First day out he got a bout of tonsilitis. So I had to drive the WING. well I never road a bike that big and not thru the Rockies to Vancouver Island. Well what a hoot once I got used to it.Puckers Ars as I went into a tunnel with a full face and sunglasses. Gee that wall got close. While peeling back visor and sunglasses.I hear those beaches in Brazil are quite nice .00.
I know what you mean about the tunnels. We have traveled the Blue Ridge Parkway many times and the Parkway is loaded with tunnels. After the first one when you see the tunnel sign the visor goes up and the glass off!
We bought the 1991 Wing new and only put a 'few" miles on it; when we sold it in 1999 it had 156,000 + miles and was still running well. We are in Ohio and the bike saw the Pacific Ocean 3 times, the Gulfcoast once, and the Atlantic several times. There is NOTHING like taking a 3 week vacation on a Gold Wing. You have all the creature comforts of a Cadillac except a roof; reverse gear, cruise control, AM/FM, casette deck, intercom, CB radio, and I added a CD changer, backrest, highway pegs front and reartons of chrome, and lots of lights and neons on the underside. I am not from WV, though that would be OK if I was, and the bike name was "Almost Heaven." Charley Bussard, rip, did the six color pinstripping and the saddlebag murals. We led charity rides 3 times to support the Shrine Children's Hospitals. Those rides are called "1000 in One", that's 1000 miles in 24 hours. We were always tired at the end of that ride, but it was a lot of fun!! What could be more fun that leading 8-14 bikes on a 1000 mile ride!
We were always proud that our Wing was made in the USA, like the Harley, but today it would be different if we were to buy another Wing. I still have a good many friends who ride and we stay in touch. So far none have traded in their USA made bikes for a Japan made one. That is bound to happen as the bikes get older."A man's got to know his limitations." Dirty Harry Calahan

PS: how does this relate to the OP and woodworking ? I find it a great elixir and preparation that is intoxicating but not sensory impairing to forget my day job and crazy outside world and cool me out and set the tone for a quality and ( if lucky ) creative period in the shop.
Once I got away from my normal routine for a couple of weeks with the holiday thing and have now come back to my routine I rediscovered how damned important Brazilian music and the founders of Samba and Bossa are to me.
Sorry if I am ignorant in all that for the most part, I am not smart when it comes to anything technical about music. I just listen with a guy on the street ear. I know what I like when I hear it, iTunes has allowed me to easily cut the diamonds from the stuff I don't care for and assemble a brilliant ( if incomplete ) example of some thing fine.
I copied my "Samba" play list from my iTunes and am attempting to post it here in the hopes of sharing, with those unfamiliar with these, this GREAT gift to the world from Brazil.
As I said top shelf and I meant at the top of all I listen to.
