Hi, guys I have a question. I am looking into finding a school for cabinet making(maybe a 12-16 week course ?). Can anyone make any suggestions as to a good quality school for cabinetmakers. I have been an amateur woodworker for years, I just want to really better my craftsmanship.

eddiec9,
Do you have a community college near you? If so, I would check with them to see if they offered the type of cabinetmaking program you are looking for.
RR
Rookie, there are several colleges in the area. However, all they have is basic construction trades or intro to woodworking.
eddiec9,
I would just make sure to actually speak to the instructor about the course as many times the course name is not really indicative of the course content.
In any event, I am sure that you will be able to find something, somewhere. How about the College of the Redwoods? I hear they are ok at what they do. :-)

Look at the ads in WW magazines. There are a few to choose from, near and far. If you're really into it, that won't matter. Maybe there's a pro WW'er nearby you could get lessons from?

Try calling a cabinet shop....We are always looking to train people who want to learn...There is a good school in Mass...Is that close to you?
Good Luck

Hello,
I actually just graduated from the Thomas Chippendale International School of Furniture Design, Making, and Restoration in Scotland. I would recommend it to any one.
Here is the link to their web site.

Since you didnt say where you live in my area Id check out Cerritos College or Palomar College for cabinet making. There both located in SoCal. Both schools though public are award winning and have long wait list to attend. If youjust want to build your own for your own self then check out Paul Levines video and book combos if you want the euro cabs.

Check Fine Woodworking website. They have a listing of schools divided by state and international region. Also the back of Fine Woodworking magazine and Woodwork magazine both list school ads as well. That's how I found my school, Worcester Center for Crafts. If you're only looking to go for 12 or so weeks the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine is an excelent choice.

How about working in a Cabinet Shop?Learn and make a little money also.
I have looked into the three shops in my area, I live in Texas about 150 miles south of Houston, however no one does really high end work. No demand or so I have been told. I did look at the Chippendale school website, that is a direction I really had not though of, but I am now.
eddiec9,
Wouldn't 150 miles south of Houston put you in the Gulf a little south of Galveston? :-) I'm guessing Victoria, maybe????
RR
Close I actually live outside of Victoria about 20 miles.
Lived in El Campo a few years and had grandparents in Refugio. Spent many miles going up and down 71!
In that case Rookie you know why there is not a lot of demand for high end cabinet makers in the area.
Since I now know you live in Texas. There is a guy who use to at FHB and Joe Fusco's site his name is Frank "Mad Dog" Maglin. He has a one man Cab shop and does amazing work. See try at either FHB or http://www.JosephFusco.org he should be able to hook you up. Plus hes a heck of a nice guy too.

The work done by students from the North Bennet Street School in Boston always impressed me. http://www.nbss.org
Also, Algonquin College in Ottawa, Ontario offers degrees in cabinet making, but the full curriculum is probably 2 years or so.
I know there are many others.
The Furniture Institute of Massachusetts run by Phil Lowe would be an excellent option. Phil is a former department head at Nort Bennet Street and has been in business for himself since the mid-80's. He not only teaches the craft, he also teaches the business side, something that NBSS and College of the Redwoods don't do.
