Does anyone have experience buying lumber online?
Looking for a source of boulcut / sequenced planks in the upper mid-west.
The best sources seem to be in the pennsylvania area I am apprehensive about spending big dollars sight unseen.

This is a common question. Perhaps the best advice is to use http://www.woodfinder.com and search for a local lumber outlet (or several) that's close so you can save the shipping costs and actually see the product before you buy.
Since you live in the upper midwest, you should be able to easily find a local source for sequence-matched lumber out of the common domestic species in your area (cherry, walnut, and maple certainly come to mind).
I understand your concern, but if you are talking about buying lumber from one of the very well known dealers in Pennsylvania, I wouldn't be the least bit apprehensive. Just describe to the dealer what you are specifically looking for and I am sure that they will accommodate you.
Usual disclaimers apply:
Although I have never personally purchased from Irion Lumber, I understand they specialize in exactly what you are asking for, sequence matched lumber. Described here http://www.irionlumber.com/what3.htm. They are reported to be very very good (and expensive)
I can personally vouch for Irion - I've bought several tons (literally) from them. Exceptional wood, exceptional service. And at least from the standpoint of their "Maple Prime" product, considerably cheaper than the equivalently figured wood from some of the bigger net retailers (such as Gilmer Wood).
And should you at some point want wide-board walnut, I don't think there's anyone else in the country that can get you sequence-matched 22-28" boards (and at about $12 b.f. no less - that's pretty cheap for uber-wood).
Thanks that's good to know..
I have purchased much lumber from Groff and Groff and to a lesser extent Hearne, both personally and via the phone and been pretty pleased with the results.
Happy lumber hunting
I've had my best luck with Grof & Grof. They're in PA (near Lancaster). Quality through several orders has been excellent and pricing seems better than many other dealers online.
