I am thinking of buying a STEEL CITY TOOL WORKS 25200 mortiser. Good idea? Bad idea? I don’t want to spend much more than that would cost.
I am planning to make a mantel in the Arts and Crafts Style and it has many more mortise and tenon joints than I want to chop by hand.

I think the Steel City mortiser is the absolute best in it's price range. When I was shopping for a mortiser, I went where I could lay hands on the Shop Fox, General (2 models), Jet and Delta. Was ready to spend up to $400 and get the tilting-head General, but the Steel City was sitting there with its big table, built-in extended stock support, roller hold-ins and simply stole the show.
Someone (Powermatic?) makes a benchtop that has many of the SC features, and is toolless in adjustments, but doesn't have the built-in stock supports. Significantly more expensive.
Have you considered a slot morticer, much easier to use and just as strong.
