Sapele from the same log!
In my shop for a three years or so.. Same BIG ‘stick’ just different slices. All ‘looked the same untill adding on the whipe on oli..
All lovely but some came out about 4 shades darker…. And these hunks of wood were carved. What happened?

Whenever you get ready to finish something, if you wipe it with some mineral spirits or alcohol, you will see the color the wood will take on with a clear finish.
Since you say these were carved, I would have to imagine some of the wood absorbed the finish more than other parts--sort of like end grain?
Gretchen I hear and agree but not in this case,,,
Could some be heart wood and some sap wood. Absorbancy could vary considerably.
Another outside possibility to be considered is chatoyance--what happens when you turn the boards around under the light?
