I’m in the process of building a set of built-ins. First time I’ve done it, can’t be that hard. Question: the room has wall-to-wall carpeting that is going to be replaced with hardwood later this year.
Should I install the built-ins on top of the carpeting? Cut the carpeting away from the footprint of the built-ins and install on flooring beneath? Cut the carpeting away and shim the built-ins up to the level of the yet-to-be-installed hardwood?

My opinion, definitely remove the carpet under the built-ins. You didn't say whether or not the the built-ins will have a base molding. If so, I would leave the base molding off and set the built-ins directly on the subfloor. Once the new hardwood floors are installed add the base molding to the built-in. Otherwise, use some plywood or MDF to shim up the built-ins so the bottom will be flush to the level of the new hardwood floors.
Definately remove the carpet.

HI
I built two about ten yrs. ago in our new home here in MO. .I did not remove the carpet, they look just fine. Since they well stay with the house when it is sold what does it matter if the carpet is their or not. It does have a base and they are from floor to ceiling.
I've done it both ways - Two pieces were built over carpet, one I cut the carpet out from under.Since you are replacing the carpet, remove it. Sure, I was able to trim out the bottoms when I put in laminate flooring. But, I think you'll be happier going to the subfloor....Tom Iovino

Thanks everyone. What I'm going to do is not make them permanent until after we re-do the floor, at which point I'll anchor them in a permanent fashion.
