I’m using spar varnish on a general shop bench top and have lots of air bubbles in the finish. I have used both badger and boar bristle brushs and used varnish unthinned and thinned up to 30%. I dip brush in varnish and push brush against side of container and apply it. I will then tip off finish with brush at 90 degress to surface and I still get air bubbles. Temperature is about 60 degrees in the shop and I live in the Pacific Northwest. I do not have this problem with brushing lacquer. Thanks for any support.

Brink,
There is a very easy fix to your problem; STOP pushing the edge of your brush against the edge of the container. When you compress the bristles loaded with varnish, it creates all those air bubbles. The next thing you do is apply those bubbles to the surface and ,as you're finding out, very difficult to repair.
Dip your brush into the varnish, if you need to unload it at all, tap it very lightly against a separate container. You might also consider loading the brush less so there is no need to tap it off.
I see you're using bristle brushes. Try using a foam brush some day. I just dampen one lightly with a little solvent, dip the first 34's of an inch into the varnish a couple of times and then hold it upright for a couple of seconds. It is now "charged" Apply the varnish lightly and quickly re-loading as required. There are no brush marks with this method. I know it can't be that easy, but it is.
Good luck,
Peter
