Hi All,
I was hoping for some help locating some small brass pins, the ones featured in FWW #139 in Gary Rogowski’s piece on “A Small Elegant Box”. The FWW editors have made a video of it in the Getting Started in Woodworking series. I looked at Woodcraft and Veritas Hardware online to no avail. I thought I might have been over-thinking it a bit and checked at Home Depot… zippo. Anybody know where I can get these little guys? Mr. Rogowski suggests two sizes, 1-1/8″ and 1-1/4″. If anybody knows a good online retailer or anybody in the northern Virginia area I’d appreciate it! Cheers…

I've always used brazing rods from the local welding supply & cut off what I needed. Stores that deal in models, like model trains, usually stock small brass rods too.
A quick search on Google brought up http://www.quickshipmetals.com/
Also, search for brass rod on Amazon.com.
http://www.mcmaster.com, http://www.mscdirect.com The brazing rod is a good one...easy to find locally and inexpensive. Places that sell model building stuff would be an option but they are going to charge the most.
I'd go for the 1" from Lee Valley. Length isn't critical on the glued sides where the pins are pretty much ornamental. It matters more on the base, but the pins should hold if drilled at a slight angle.

Fastenal has a lot of brass stock that you can cut to the size you need.
Erich,
They look like brass escutcheon pins. Any real <g> hardware store should sell them. Never tried to get them at Home Creepo but they would perhaps be on the display with tacks, brads, etc. The "small box" piece was very well done and I am looking forward to trying my hand at a few.
Best!

Hi Everybody,
Thanks for the wealth of ideas. I'm sure one of these tips will do the trick! I'm half-way through the project and the glue-up is looming. It's been a small but enjoyable diversion. Thanks again...
