Making a Spokeshave Cap Iron
I am tuning up a Stanley spokeshave I have using an article from FW October 2002 issue (“Soup Up Your Spokeshave”, #158, pages 45-49). I am having difficulty finding 1/4″ thick brass stock to make the cap iron for the spokeshave. Finding a machine shop with scrap brass stock, as suggested in the article, has proved futile.
I would appreciate any help in locating some brass stock.

If there are any knife supply shops in your area they normally have brass stock on hand in thicknesses to 1/4". You may be able to find them on line, try http://www.texasknife.com and another is janetz supply out of Oklahoma.
Bob,
McMaster-Carr will have what you want. (http://www.mcmaster.com). An Alloy 360 Free Machining Brass rectangle - 2" wide, 1/4" thick, and 1' (foot) long is $13.91. They have numerous thickness, width, and brass type options.
