I remember seeing chests with a bowed lid, covered with quilting/needlepoint as a child in England. As I recall the lid was strips of wood (probably ash) bent and joined with the fabric stretched over the frame.
My wife has re-discovered quilting after 20 years and we are trying to blend wood with fabric.
Any ideas,comments appreciated,

This was probably a decorative step for your area.
Bowed top chests were used by the wealthy for traveling with a practical purpose in mind. Since it is hard to stack crowned lid chests, they would go into the hold or the baggage car last to be placed on top. Easy to find and first to unload at end of trip. and since they were more expensive to build, only the upper crust had them. The quilting sounds like just one more step in their evolution.
