I was perusung the Tools for Working Wood site a couple of days ago and there is a good write up on using bow saws that had some info on tensioning if I recall. Here is a link:

I do it by gut. Tighten it so it's stiff without letting any of the frame warp or creak or anything like that. If the blade flexes at all during use, tighten some more. I'd think you'd have to be a bit of a brute to over-tighten one.

Thank you! I am afraid of cracking the frame.
I "pluck" the saw blade and tighten until the note is clear. A loose blade will have a raspy-rattle sound.
