I’m building a book stand out of claro walnut that is 44″ tall and 21″ at it’s widest. The top is 21″x 24″ and includes a shelf. I would like the top and shelf to look a little different by using a lighter color or different species of wood. However, I’m not sure what goes well with the colors and grain of walnut. I like mohagany, but don’t care for the combination and maple would be too light.
I want to stay with the darker, rich colors or should I? Could I stain/ dye the sides darker and leave the top more natural (all walnut) or would a different species be better for the top and shelf? Should I just leave the entire project the same and don’t go for the differences? I will be using a small amount of ebony for plugs and a book rail.
Any opinions are appreciated,
Thank you

Woods
Choice of woods are endless and that's a personal design feature regarding which ones to use. I would definitely go with different woods and a natural finish than to try and stain the woods for an effect.

book stand
Thank you, I'm looking into that now. Any particular species that would look good and compliment the walnut that you would recommend? I don't know why, but I'm having a hard time coming up with something? I don't want to take away or distract from the natural beauty of walnut (which is on of my favorites).

I'm bad at those decisions. I would just go donw to the lumber yard and see what's available. My yard has exotics so there's always something that looks good. Here is a site that may help you try to figure out a species
