Blowing out dust collection bags??
When I use my Dewalt benchtop planer with my Delta 50-720 (1 HP dust collector), the planer seems to overpower the collector and will either: blow the hose off the collector, blow the top filter off, or blow holes in the plastic bag where the sawdust lives.
Any ideas why or what I can do about it? The dust port for the Dewalt planer is inconveniently located – I don’t think I can just put a bag over it…
Thanks!

Something's amiss.
I have the DW-733 and Delta 50-760 dust collector and they work fine together. How long is the DC run between them? By chance is there a blast gate closed? Sounds to me like the line is plugged if the planer is blowing the dust collector hose off. The connection has to be tight but not require a gorilla to disconnect it. Any really tight curves in the hose?
Does the DC operate without anything connected to it, i.e. the filter doesn't get blown off? Does the same thing happen when connected to other machines?
The 733 does have a rather robust chip extractor (to say the least) but I've never had a problem with it blowing the DC hose off the connector.
The connection point on the 733 is a bit awkward in terms of the DC connection point, i.e. the hose can get in the way of the stock but a bungy cord(s) solve that issue for me. The planer is also designed to be used without DC so that may have something to do with the location of the DC connection point, not sure.

I'm afraid the 720 doesn't have enough CFM... it has only 650cfm - your 760 has 1200cfm... that may be the difference.
The DC seems to work fine generally, although not a ton of suction. I might have screwed myself underbuying.
I'll recheck the blast gate and make sure everything is tightened up, but I fear the worst.
Thanks for your response!

I use a 1 HP Steel City DC on my DeWalt 735 planer with excellent results. Not sure offhand the DFM on my DC but probably similar to your Delta.
You don't say which planer you have. If you have the 735, it could be that you need more distance (hose length) between the DC and the planer. Your description of things blowing off and holes in the bags would seem a good indicator. The blower on the 735 can cause problems if the planer and DC are too close together hose-wise. It just shoots stuff into the DC.
Problem solved!
As it turns out, there was a massive clog in the upper filter drum. Whoops! The delta has one of those 'flapper' bars on top and I always give it a couple of turns after each use... turns out that wasn't enough! I cranked it hard over and over again and about 1/8 of a bag's worth of hard maple dust fell out.
I can now happily plane away!
I might try a longer hose, as suggested, too... it seems like I'm pushing it with the 735.
Thanks everyone, for the responses!
