Thanks to all for the help. The dovetailed chest is made with wide mahogany purchased from Steve Wall Lumber. The top is a single board 21 1/8” wide. There are applied 3/4” mouldings on 3 sides.
The iron chest lock looks like an expensive possibility, although from the picture I’m not yet clear how that thing works. Going lockless is my other option. Thanks again.

Sorry if someone already came up with this one. I couldn't find the original thread to respond to which I read a few days ago. Then, as is often the case, out of the blue something makes me think about it. I refer to this phenomenon as Random Access Memory.
How's this for a solution for your expansion/hardware problem... How about enlarging the latch's receiving hole (whatever it's shape) to accommodate for the lid's movement? Or you could make a new latch plate from brass stock. Or embedded rare earth magnets?
