I had thought about making one for my son a while back and had bookmarked some suppliers but he prefers aluminum. Just as well, I was a bit shocked at the price of blanks.

Yea. Me too. I have a friend that seems to remember everything he reads. That includes sales fliers and medical journals. Thought you might be that way too.

L.L. Johnson in Charlotte MI. carries them.

FWIW, the Lee Valley store in Ottawa carries the same maple blanks that are used by The Original Maple Bat company in Ottawa. http://www.sambat.com/ I think this may be a local thing as I'm not aware of them selling the blanks through the catalog. Essentially, you're looking for a tight grained, straight 3x3 blank. No pin hole knots, no curly grain.

Ron
Macbeath hardwoods has them. http://www.macbeath.com You might also try rocklers
Good luck
Troy
Take a pocketful of gold if you go to Rockler, if I remember right darn near $50 for one blank.

hey don,
my high school kids have made many ash bats. we glue (laminate) 3 pieces to form one 3" square blank. so far i've not heard of one breaking. the kids actually use these to play with. sound good?

My son's in his mid 30's and his leagues regulations for bats are the same as for pro ball. No laminated or experimental bats may be used.
I have heard that there are new bat regs for 2009 but I have not looked into them.

don,
what would be the reason for dis-allowing laminated wood bats? in my experience laminated turning blanks, with proper growth ring orientation, makes for sturdy turnings. i've done many mallets this way and find them to be excellent for carving and the like. i must admit that my interest in, and my knowledge of, any type of "ball game sport" is sorely lacking. also, when i strike with force, i try to present the edge-grain side of the mallet to the work piece. this feels tighter and tougher than the flat sawn side of the mallet. know what i mean?

Like you I have little knowledge or interest in "ball sports" although I did enjoy golf when I tried it.
I suspect the reasons lies in trying to keep a level playing field. A laminated bat provides opportunities for introducing other materials in the bat, a solid wood bat is much harder to adulterate without detection.
Ball players do pick the "sweet side" of the bat as we do with our mallets. If I remember right the bat is branded in a specific spot in order to easily facilitate said orientation.

good grief, obviously I have not been to Rocklers in a while.Troy
Either my memory is bad or pricing has changed. They currently have ash or maple blanks for $34.99 not counting shipping.
Here's a link.
