I have an old Biesemeyer fence (78-930) that only can rip up to 28″. I would like to upgrade to at least 30″ capacity but understand the newer fence tubes are not compatible with the older fence. What options exist to get the increased width without starting over?

rip width
Be clever, ingenious, inventive and drill a few extra holes ! Shift the whole fence to the left 4"s. How often do you rip with the fence on the left side of the blade anyway ? Me, hardly ever. I have installed a jessem slider table on the left side of a Unisaw and moved that wing to the right side then moved the Biesemeyer fence to the right the width of the slider table. It can be done.
Have you considered a fence stretcher from your local farm supply store? ;-)
Seriously, I think Bruce is onto the right solution - just drill new mounting holes and move it.
You might find that you can slide the rails right by the distance of a bolt hole, and not need to do any extra drilling. If your saw is left tilt, you can rob all of the left side capacity and never miss it. You may need to support the rails on the right, you'll need to relocate or replace the measuring tape, and you may want to fill the space between the rails with an extension table or router table.
If sliding the front rail isn't feasible, you could always visit a welding/steel supply store and buy stock tubing that will fit.
