I going to be building a kitchen table for a friend and he wants it painted black to match some chairs he already has. what is the best type of wood to use that will be durable and paint well ?

Hard maple makes the best and most durable table tops in my opion, painted or otherwise.
Black painted finishes can be very varied. If you mean the kind of mirror-perfect gloss finish one sees on pianos, then you're better off starting with an MDF top. If your black finish is a bit more rustic then I'd suggest using poplar or soft maple.
