I’m making some red cedar trellises for SHMBO. I’ve pegged together the mortise & tenoned posts and cross pieces, but have found finishing nails seem to be of no use in holding the lattice pieces (full 1″x1″) together. Should I be using some type of ringed nails? IF I use screws in some sections, is there anything I should prepare for viv-a-vis pre-boring or counter sinking?

What about just screwing them in with a countersink and if you don't want the screws to show, you can get a plug cutter and "bung" them?
W J, Staple them with longer staples and peen over the legs with a hammer while resting on a flat surface (Anvil /brick/ stone/ etc.)
Attach each of the staples on the diagonal, so the joint won't split.
Steinmetz.
Rest the lattice on the stone, not you!
