I want to make a finishing ball to use for varnish; potentially shellac later. What are the best materials for the inside (absorbent part) and the cover?

Chuck,
If you are referring to a "fad" for a French polish, I use cheese cloth. While some use linen or muslin for the outer part, I use old, but clean, cotton T-shirts.
The fad should be shaped like a tear drop a little larger than a golf ball. I twist the "tail" then wrap it once around the base of my first two fingers with the remnant held in the palm by the last two fingers and thumb.

*Nothing to add to the construction. If you are using this with an oil-based varnish, be sure to take some precautions against it self-combusting. What you're building could be classed as an incendiary device.Dave
*Thanks, Dave. I either put them in a zip lock bag filled with water, or toss them in the fireplace. The latter is usually reserved for winter.
