All,
I am interested in purchasing a set of carving tools… Watching the recent discussions, we have seen who makes the best router bits.. the best table saw blade..best table mounted router…etc…
Of the manufactures of carving tools have seen Stubai, Pfeil, Sorby and Taylor carving tools ( I am sure there are many others).. Can anyone recommend one manufactures tool over the other?

Stubai offers great value along with quality. Pfiel are outstanding tools but the are pricey and not all profiles are easy to find due to limited production times. Auriou tools are among the best also. They are french made and no one in the states sells them at this time. I am working on becomoing a dealer rep for Auriou but this may take some time yet.
If you happen to be in the Milwaukee WI area you can take a stop by and try some of these tools for your self. Dastra also makes a fine tool. I have not tried the others tools you mentioned but I am sur they would also do a great job for you. If your are unsure of what to purchase Email me and I could send you a couple Stubai's to try out. Timber,
Thanks for taking the time to answer my post.
I have been happy with Taylor gouges. They are less expensive than the others you mentioned and require honeing before use. Sooner or later you will have to hone any tool you use, so it is a process at which you have to become proficient anyway.
Thus far, the only tools I've been unhappy with are the first cheap set. I have lots of pfeil tools, they are pricy, but they are great. I've got some flexcut tools that sharpen great and cut great. I've got assorted sorby and some others without any names that sharpen great and work well. Some of the warren cutlery tools work very well, but I REALLY like the new flexcut tools in the canvas roll for camping carving.
I can make my stanley planes work OK with lots of tuning - a LN works better out of the box than any stanley (I guess, I can't afford them). Some cheaper tools can work OK after a little attention. However, don't try to save money on carving tools because cheap steel won't hold an edge and dull tools rip wood where sharp ones cut it.
I prefer Two Cherries and Hamlet. I own a couple of Stubai's and only use them for light work since their ferrules are internal not sure if they could take a pounding from the mallet that the other two take and still hold up. Good luck with whatever you choose and just like one of the other posts here said, don't buy cheap go for quality.

Go ahead and use the mallet on your Stubai's the internal ferrule does prevent splitting. I carve in Walnut and use a heavy mallet with no problems. If something where to happen with the tool Email and I will take care off you.

Dale, I just banged the blazes out of one of the Stubai and your right, it didn't split. Held up as well as the Two Cherries.
Thanks,

I am happy to hear you put more trust in your Stubai's. At one time or another a handle my split on any brand tool. I have split Pfeil's and others and at some time a Stubai may split on me as well. Enjoy your carving.
