Just finishing my workbench. Top is 1/4″ tempered hardboard screwed to 3/4″ plywood that’s glued and screwed to 2×4 pine with lap joints also glued and screwed. Any problem using bench dogs on such a top as long as I drill into the 2×4’s?

Maybe. Bench dogs, as well as holdfasts, work by bearing at two different points on a bench - one at the surface of the top on the side opposite of the work, and one at the bottom of the hole. Metal bench dogs might tear up the hardboard top layer - I'd suggest making wooden dogs out of dowels instead.
