I read this in a magazine and I really like these new bench dogs.
My bench has 3/4″ holes and I cut 3/4″ dowels to length and place rubber crutch tips to the ends. They hold securely and never mar the workpieces.

Are your dog holes square?
Any chance you can post a photo of the "crutch tips" you are referring to?

Sorry no pics. Holes are round. Crutch tips are really just rubber slightly tapered cylinders that slide over the end of the 3/4" dia dowel. When you drop them into the bench holes, only the rubber is above the table surface.
