My old belt sander (skil 4″, 21.75 belt) has started poping belts at the seam. What should I look for the cause of this? Its only 20 years old but has auto tracking so I would rather keep it running.

1) How old are the belts and how have you been storing them? The glue on the joints can have a variable life.
2)If they are new belts are you sure they are the correct length?
3) Have you got the direction of rotation correct?
i agree with phillip. It is either the age of the belts, or defective glue. Ask for a refund if they are new.
Those belts don't do well if stored in high humidity. I know.
Sanding belt breakage can also be caused by worn bearings or bushings on the drive roller, maybe the idler roller as well.
