Hey thanks, looks like what I needed.

I just completed a bunk bed and I got the plans from Rockler. It was relatively easy to make, just time consuming what with all the slats for the bed posts. You can also order the hardware for the bed which is a good idea since it allows the bed to be disassembled and reassembled easily. That's very helpful when hauling it up stairs to a grandchild's bedroom.
Good luck, Jim

Last year I built a queen size bed for my son and his fiance. I found a photo of one style they liked and built the bed in a similar fashion.
What I did was cut 3/4 oak ply to size.
Then I essentially made 4-2X4 pieces out of solid oak and dadoed the oak 2X4 i hade made to recess the ply into it.
I then laid a strip of 4" wide oak around the sides to create a recessed panel.
To hide the edges of the plywood I used oak trim and glued and pinned it into place.
Across the top I laid a 1X4 piece of oak to cover the top of the plywood and the end grain of the vertical pieces.
For the rails I ripped a fir 2X4 in half and glued and screwed this to a 1X8 piece of oak. To hide the screws I recessed and plugged the screw holes.
From rail to rail I made about 6- 3" wide strips of plywood and screwed these to both rails to support the mattress and box spring.
I then used 2 coats of mahogany stain to give it a rich chocolate color. Then I put 3 coats of wipe on ploy over that.
The bed has been used for a year now by two young "Active" people with out an issue.
The bed headboard and footboard did take 2 people to move due to weight but they were very happy with it and still are.
I did 2 sets of bunk beds when my kids were young. I designed them so that the foot and head had slats that acted as ladders to get to the top bunk. They could be disassembled and the foot or head could be exchanged with the foot of head of the upper bunk and they would be separated and function as two single beds not bunk beds.
ASK
Thank you.

This is a good site. I've build a couple projects from them and they are well done.
