Hi all:
I am building a bed and deciding if I should build the bed postlegs glued out of 5/4 stock or purchase rough cut 4×4.
I am worried about twisting of the 4/4 when cut to 2×2 or should I be, I would like to avoid the “seem” of the glue up since it will be a light finish and I will have to stare at it until I am dead.
The post will be 2×2 when finished.
Bed made out of Maple, post will be about 50 inches in the front and 24 in the back, modeled after the Craftmen bed in Jef Millers Book “Beds”.
thanks

Hacker,
I f you don't want to glue up your stock, I'd recommend you look for 8/4 stock (2" thick) You should be able to rip it into squares, and finish at 1 3/4".. If you must end at 2" square, you will be better off to find 10/4 (2 1/2" thick), rather than 16/4 (4 x4). While 4x4" stock will yield 4 pieces of 2x2, it'll likely cost you more per bd foot than equilivant amt of 2" thick stock.

Ray
I made the pencil post bed out of that book. The plans are great.
Here's what I would do for the posts (I did this for mine, but changed the numbers for you since I needed 3x3 posts, but the idea is the same): for each post, use 6/4 stock (5/4 is cutting it a bit close). Try to find pieces just under 6" wide, so you can run it on the jointer. Flatten one face and an edge. Then, rip two pieces about 2-1/2" wide on the table saw. Glue the two flat faces together, with the first saw cut creating a bookmatched edge. From there, you can square it up on the jointer and planer.
I would allign the glue joint so that the non-bookmatched side goes into the headboard/footboard.
Purely personal, I suppose, but I would use only solid stock, and would not laminate, for the posts. You might get away with 8/4 stock, depending, but porbably not. Take you ruler to the yard, and cross your fingers.

Hacker,
I just finished a bed using hard maple posts and highly recommend that you go with 10/4 stock and plane/mill to your finished dimensions.

Thanks for the feed-back,,looks like I will skip the Glue Up and find the correct stock.
