Hey,
I just picked up a Jet jointer and would like to build a wood base for the metal base to sit on/in to raise the height a little and give it a little more stability. This thing is amazingly short. Any construction ideas would be appreciated. I just hate it when you build something and then stand back and look at it and say
, I should have……
Also, will a link belt really make it vibrate less, or am I just kidden’ myself?
Thanks in advance
Darren

Here ya go... I have the Jet 6" jointer and put it on a mobil base setup. I laminated two 3/4" ply pieces (glued and screwed) to fit inside the Rockler mobile base corner ears. The wood base is 16" by 24", and fits inside the rails of the Rockler mobile base after you build them. For the rails I laminated red oak and set the grain so the lamination is vertical. I then bolted the jointer base to the ply base, and counterbored the base to recess the bolt heads from the bottom side of the ply. Overall, the base size worked out to be wide enough, but not underfoot. If you want picture or two, let me know. With the three wheel setup on the Rockler base, it rolls well and is stable.

Darren, how much does the jointer vibrate? Mine (6" Jet) is very quiet except for that little shudder when it starts up and winds down. I haven't put the link belt on there yet, but have put one on my contractor's saw, and it really did make a huge difference in how smoothly it runs.
As to the base, I was in such a hurry to get it up and jointing, I just slapped a piece of plywood into an extra furniture dolly and bolted the jointer to it. Works just fine, but won't make it into any gallery photos for sure!

As FG said, it shouldn't vibrate that much if it is sitting solid on the floor. I do believe I would check to make sure the top bolts are secure to the base, check the motor mount bolts and make sure the pulleys align so the belt is traveling straight between them. A bad bearing in the motor or cutter-head is also possible, but it would probably whine if that were the case.
The link belt will operate smoother than a regular V-belt.
