barrel grip version of Bosch 1590 jigsaw
Hello,
I’d just about pryed my wallet open last fall to spend the $$$ on a barrel grip Bosch jigsaw (1584, I think) when I heard that they were going to be bringing out a new model this spring to address the (admittedly small) issues w/ the 1584/1587 series. So I decided to wait. The Bosch is to supercede my Craftsman, which ousted the old B&D that someone bought me long ago, so I wasn’t in a *huge* hurry. I’ve been waiting, and maybe I’ve missed something in the static floating around the Internet, but I don’t seem to have seen a barrel grip version of the new jigsaw, just the D-handle. The ones I’ve had before are D-handle, which I can work w/ ok, but from the way it sounds, people w/ larger hands (like me) are often happier w/ the more spacious grip of the barrel grip saws?
Am I missing something, or is the 1590 (d-handle) all there is for now?
TIA,
Monte

I am going to be picking up an new jigsaw in the near future and I am looking at the same model Bosch. The only thing bad I have ever heard about the Bosch barrel grip saw is that the barrel gets a little to warm to hold comfortably after prolonged use. Besides that it is supposed to be a great saw. Now I will have to do so reading on there new saw.

I have a Bosch barrel-grip and before it was purchased for me by my company to do a special project (50' parts counter with a portion semi-round) I would avoid using a jig-saw at all cost.
I love the barrel-grip for it's control and find no major issues or complaints about the old style. If they can make it better, so be it. Given the way my current Bosch preforms it will be around for another 20 + years and I will consider the new model which won't be new by then. ha.. ha...

I've owned the Bosch barrel-grip for about 15 years and it was a fantastic tool then. I'm sure any later model is even better, but I'm not sure I'd wait.
Monte,
I've had a Bosch jigsaw (with top handle) for, gosh, probably 15 years or so and I love it. If a catastrophe were to occur, however, and I had to replace it, I'd be looking long and hard at the Festool. I used a friend's and it's markedly better than my Bosch. Festool's track system (also used with their router and circular saw) is the icing on the cake, so to speak.
Good luck with your decision,

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.
Milanuk,
The D handle version is currently available, and the barrel grip is supposed to be out in early may, I believe.

I picked up the 1590 a few weeks ago. The manual shows a barrel grip with a model number of 1591. Check out the 1590 thou, the handle is slightly larger than the previous model.
I've owned the barrel grip Bosch for 12 years and have been satisfied with it's performance. However, given the advances in tools in recent years I think that there are plenty other saws that are comparable or even better. The barrel grip gives you more control, which is a feature that I personally like, however if you are doing power coping of large crown moulding or any operation that requires variable speed changes during the cut, the D-handle with it's variable speed trigger is the saw you need. milanuk,
I was at the Long Island woodworking show this last weekend. The Bosch rep said that the barrel-grip version will be out shortly...

The barrel grip is a fine machine. I miss it most of all after going completely unplugged a few years ago.
Completly unplugged Boss? Sounds like a fulfilling workout. Might I ask what you build?Steve
Federal, Arts & Crafts, some Shaker. Some original pieces.
