All,
What would cause the tire on the bottom wheel of my 14″ Delta bandsaw to come off …after spewing several bits and pieces? I was resawing some 6″ wide 6/4 cherry about 5′ long. The first piece went okay with a bit of drift…and about 7/8 the way thru the second piece the tire came off. My machine is only about 7 months old….and has not been used heavily….using a 1/2 blade timberwolf.
thanks

Tension? The one time I ripped a tire of my bandsaw I'd gotten a bit zealous on the tension. ;-)
Ed Harrow,
I had not modified the tension since initial set up and have been using the 1/2' blade for some time without incidence...resawing 4-5" thick stock. The only thing that would have changed the tension is the amount of drift ??..could that have cause it?
Sorry, I have no further suggestions.
However, "I had not modified the tension since initial set up and have been using the 1/2' blade for some time without incidence..."
You do loosen up the tension when you are not using the saw...
Ed,
Yup, every time I turn the bandsaw off...I throw the handle that releases the tension...and before starting, apply tension and with my hand turn the wheel a few times to insure its tracking poperly....
Oooooo, what a bummer, BG! Speaking of tension, did you use the "flutter test" to set your tension on the Timber Wolf blade?

FG,
I checked everything after the incident...coplaner, running motor with just the belt to see if vibration was too high.. Went over to Woodcraft and asked John (John invented wood) he just scratched his head. I replaced the tire with a Carter and set everything up except I've discarded the 1/2" blade. With a 1/4" blade it's running very smoothly...so we'll see...............................there may have been a kink in the timber wolf....maybe that is what did it...
BG, what method did you use to set the tension originally?forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
FG,
I did the flutter method to set the orginal tension on the Timber Wolf blade. Of course, none of the stores I went to had any 1/2" 3 or 4 TPI Timber Wolf blades in my size...so I'm trying an Olson....we'll see...
BG,
I had a similar experience with my 14" delta, shortly after I got it (1975). I replaced the tire with another one from delta, and have not had a problem with tires since then. Using the saw at least once a day, since I got it. I figured I got a bad tire; maybe you did too.

joinerswork,
It would be nice if it were just a bad tire. I replaced it with a Carter yesterday..but I'm a bit concerned because the Carter is 7/8" which dose not fill the space on the wheel (about an 1")....I pulled the tire forward all around and does appear to be tracking okay...we'll see.
I also noticed that when I raise the guard to full height so that I can resaw 6" wood...the guard rubs on the aluminum wheel...maybe that had something to do with it too...also, the rubbing is not constant which implys the wheel maybe a bit out of round???...how much is too much??? I'm not sure I want to learn anymore....lol
