I’m having difficulty carving my first ball and claw foot. I’m working with black walnut. Would I have made a better choice by starting with mahogany for my first try? I have watched the Phil Lowe video and have followed his procedure but without his nice results.

Did you try studying Gene Landon's article from about a year ago? He did a Master Class on the subject for the magazine and I thought his photo sequence was pretty thorough.

There's two other articles on the subject on our site but they're from a few decades back and might not be as well photographed, although they do include great writeups on the technique.
