Hello I was wondering if someone could give me advice on Auriou rasps. After the last issue of FWW in which they stated that you need three to get started I was hoping someone could advise me on three rasps that would do general shaping on furniture. I would like 1 coarse and 1 medium and 1 fine and I know Auriou grades their rasps on a grain basis. I read on the Tools for Woodworking website that woodworkers use #9-15 grain with the lower #’s being used for shaping rocks but on the Lie-Nielsen website they offer a three grain for general roughing. Thanks,Mike

I'm obviously no expert but a #10 for rapid removal of material followed bya #12 or 13 and finally a #15 has worked well for me.

Hi Mike
I have a #11 from the Cabinetmakers series, and a #13 and #15 from the Modelers series. I bought them from The Best Things before Auriou closed down.
The Best Things does have a couple of selection suggestions. Their three-rasp group are: 4-250-11-AU, 6-175-13-AU, & 6-150-15-AU. (which is what I have!). They also have suggestions for 5- and 7-rasp sets. These are not Auriou-badged, but my understanding is that they are made by ex-Auriou craftsmen.

I only have two, so I guess that I haven't gotten started yet?

The major argument against getting too coarse a rasp is that even the fairly fine one will cut very fast and very smooth. for starters I would stick to around a grain 9 give or take. the really coarse grains like a 4 are useful for blowing away a mass of material - like in a chair leg - but they will need to be followed with finer rasps and scrapers.
Almost all rasped surfaces need to be followed by scrapers but one with the really coarse grains is there a huge amount of followup material removeal.
