Company going out of business because of labor issues. I hate to see that when a company has been in business for so long and does things by hand the old way in making a superior product.
I went out and bought one yesterday at my local Woodcraft. I had to use my hand plane mad money, but I thought I should get one while I could. Anyone else making a special exception and going out and buying any?

Jeff,
What was it that you bought?
Paul
I bought the Cabinetmakers Rasp 225x28x5.5 in the G10 size.
Oh, that is too bad. Hadn't bought any of their items yet, but knew from reading that they were my first choice when the time came. Darn!
I am patiently (not!) waiting at the door for mine to arrive from Highland. I got the 7 3/4" cabinet rasp with 11 grain. I had been wanting one for some time and news of this pushed me over the edge.

Hey Jeff,
I just received three Auriou rasps this week and did a little trial with them on some soft pine.
My first impression was that even though they are cut much finer than either of my Nicholsons, they cut as fast or faster. Despite the aggressiveness of the cut, they leave a surface as smooth as a half round bastard file.
I'm sure that much of this has to do with the fact that the Auriou rasps are new, and my Nicholsons have several years of use on them. Nonetheless, the performance of the Auriou product was impressive.
Oh, one of the reasons that convinced me to buy the Auriou rasps, while I was able, is that they are cut for right or left handed use. As a southpaw, I always appreciate the accommodation when it's offered.

Tom -I am with ya. I just received mine today and it is wonderful. I used it on some lyptus this afternoon and wow! It is super sharp and leaves a fine surface. I hit is lightly with sandpaper and done. I can see that this will quickly become a "go-to" tool.Josh
This may be of interest to ALL given the closing of Auriou.

I already had a #13, but when the news broke I picked up an 8" #9 and a rat-tail. Shop around. There are non-trivial price differences between various internet vendors.Joe
I've heard that Gramercy Tools is coming out with a line of rasps which are supposed to be comparable. Not quite as fine, but not nearly as costly.Chris @ flairwoodworks
Hammer,
As much as I would like one of those rasps - I'm going to use that coupon tomorrow for a set of LN chisels - nothing like saving $60.
Can't thank you enough!

The LN chisels are worth the full price, so $60 off makes them that much sweeter. Very nice chisels (I use themd daily). I dropped for a set of bench chisels, and a set with the longer handles for paring. Glad I did.
Jeff
JeffHow do you like the longer handles? How do they compare to the Stanley 720, which had a longer chisel steel and larger handle than the 750's that the LN's are pattered after. I've wondered why LN doesn't make a 720 reproduction, since they love to make Stanley tools over again. They would sell a mess of 'em. Tom"Notice that at no time do my fingers leave my hand"
The longer handles are great for paring. I've got very large hands, so I appreciate the longer handles. They allow me greater control.
As you know, they are simply the 750 copies with longer wooden handles. The 720's had much longer steel length.
I agree with you that whatever Stanley tools that LN decides to remake, they will sell in large quantities.
Jeff
Hey Jeff,
Yes I agree, they are very well made. They were $258 including tax. I left the store feeling slightly guilty ;)
Jeff, I have a question. Are the paring chisels the same as the bench, just with longer handles?
Lee
Yes.
Lee,
Exactly the same with longer handles.
Jeff
I was at the Lie-Nielsen site...this was on the Ariou page...

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
Quick, sell your rasps on ebay while the getting is good. :) Seriously, I searched the other day and a few went for over $500 and up to $600.Josh
Josh,
Those collectors are gonna feel like the bookies in Vegas after the Superbowl!

Nah,
They got the valuable Type 1 Auriou's! Can't take them out of the factory plastic sleeve though, or you decrease the value.
T.Z.
very, very funny and probably true. Although if you could have them blessed buy Kernov or Maloof they would be worth even more:)Troy
