I have a bunch of old but unused 12 inch sanding discs and am looking for tips on attaching them to the aluminum face plate. I tried the Delta disc adhesive stick that you rub on the face plate while it’s running and then stick the disc to the warm surface but this doesn’t yield a reliable joint and I’ve thrown several discs off.
In various forums I read about shearers glue but all these seem to come from Europe and I can’t find the glue anywhere. Others mention contact cement which I’m sure would attach them but I don’t know how you would go about removing the spent discs.
Looking for some advice.

The disc adhesive has always worked for me. The trick, I think, is to get just the right amount of adhesive on the plate.
Thanks Ralph. I'll give it another try if the contact cements don't work out.John
You can use 3M 77 spray adhesive. A can is a must have in my shop for many things.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Hammer1Thanks for the suggestion. What kind of problems do you have getting the disc off after using this material?John
The disc will peel off easily. It helps to put a piece of wax paper under the top part as you peel off, that way the disc doesn't stick back down as you rotate. Go easy with the spray, it doesn't take much to work. The 3M 77 works any place you want to stick sandpaper, like on a sled or miter bar for a no-slip surface, flat surface for truing a handplane. Good for gluing down patterns, adding support strips to a router table, etc. Cleans up with lacquer thinner or 3M adhesive remover.Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Hammer1,Thanks for the info. I've got some of the adhesive you suggest. I'll give it a try also. Between the three suggestions I'll be a month trying everything out.All the bestJohn
I have had luck using rubber cement. I coated both the plate and the disc. Comes off easy and is easy to clean off as well.Craig Patterson

Hi Mate
Bear Brand formulates a disk adhesive (weakened contact cement) especially for attaching disks to back plates. Used it for many years on multiple machines in a school workshop environment (believe me those kids really tested it to the max). Never had a failure and the adhesive came off easily with mineral turps (white spirit). This was in Australia, don't know about availability where you are.
Thanks for the response wotnow. What form does this come in, tube, spray can, regular can for application with a brush?John
JohnThe adhesive I used came in a can and you brushed it on. Several sized cans available, you don't need much and it seemed to last forever, didn't go off. I'm pretty sure its part of the Norton group.Bruce
Thanks Bruce. I'll give it a try.John
