I recently built a box out of 1/2″ plywood with 45 degree mitered corners. It was very difficult to glue up, as the corners wanted to creep. Can anyone suggest a method to perform this operation?

There are at least a dozen ways to do it, and you didn't mention how deep the box was, for but the ones I've done, which were less than 6" deep (width of frame boards), I've used the Lee Valley web clamp (much better than the Pony equivalent).
Others will pitch in with devices that would work better on larger boxes, or something fancier for the small ones, I'm sure. ;-)
achome I use plain blue painters tape. I lay the pc. w/ the angles down, tape across ends, strectch tape TIGHT, turn over, apply glue, turn on edge, stretch tape on the last end. Never a problem. On larger, thicker (3/4") pcs., I use Merle clamps.

Use regular old clear shipping tape. Lay out the pieces dry on with tape running the entire length of the miter so you can fold up the entire box. Should be fairly tight. Do a dry fit before you glue. You can tweak the square with a clamp on two opposite corners across the length if needed.
All of the above are good. With 3/4" boxes I've found a 1/8" spline helpful, though I've never tried it on anything smaller.

For small-ish to medium-sized boxes, I use picture-frame clamps on the corners and a strap clamp around the middle.
I use web clamps for that sort of glueup. Believe it or not, I've had good luck with the Pony clamps I got for ~$10 each at Agent Orange.
achome,
Like many others I use the tape in most circumstances. One minor point that helps, I tack down a cleat on the workbench to help align the pieces or both applying the tape on the back side, applying the glue on the inside and rolling the parts up into a box.
Thanks very much to all. I will use your suggestions on my next box. This one, by the way, was 24"w x 18"d x 4"h.
