Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone could give me direction in making the bent arrow back slats of an arrow back chair? I have looked through several chair making books, but can’t find anything on this topic.
Thank you very much,
Jeremiah

There are many many good books about bending wood. Various methods can be used from steam to laminations. If the shaping of the slats is not radical, no bending might be required at all. Instead you could just cut them out of a thick piece of stock with a bandsaw - drawknife shaves etc.

Thank you Samson,I actually have a few books on bending. I guess what I'm really asking is how do you "shape" the "arrow" back slat. Do you turn on a lathe, bandsaw the flats, then bend? or bend then shape with spoke shaves? or am I completely out in the dandelions somewhere?I appreciate your response,Jeremiah
I think it depends on the chair design you are going for. Most arrow back antique chairs I've seen did not have huge bends, and I'm guessing were shaped on shave horses (perhaps after the lathe). I think I've seen Maloof style rockers with arrow slats and more bend that - again guessing - I think were probably band sawed - maybe then filed, then sanded to shape. There are tons of ways to get to the end - there is no THE WAY. You might get better advice from others here if you have a pic of something similar to what you are trying to achieve. Like this:
