I am considering purchasing a hand held power plane, and am wondering what you all recommend. I have read the recent post regarding the Bosch plane, but I am looking for one with two blades, not just one. It would be used for some construction work and some finishing. I am not in the habit of buying poor quality tools, since then I don’t have to replace them quickly;). That said, I have considered Makita, DeWalt, and Bosch, and currently favor the Bosch for several features. What would you recommend, and what would your reasons be.

Graham

Jon, I bought the Makita.model#N1900B. After comparing it to the bosch, It's obviously a better built pro. grade machine. A real workhorse, and this machine along with the belt sander from Makita are favored on jobsites where I come from, for there strength and reliability.
The Makita has easy, accurate, and reliable shoe adjustment, easy belt changes, easy blade changing, and external motor brush replacement, and these are what I consider important features.
Finally after asking three different warranty approved repair shops their opinion, they all said the same thing. While both Makita and Bosch make decent machines, they make a lot more money on Bosch than they do on Makita.

Graham: Also with the Makita planer you can still get a full size set of carbide planer blades at were offered in the tool 15 years ago. Now they come with a 3 1/4" insert blade, not a bad blade but they can not be resharpen. good luck
Gentlemen,
Thanks for the fast reply. The common Bosch model is the single blade model, 3365 I believe. Is the bigger one better than the Makita, or do you know. What about the DeWalt? A friend of mine bought one of those, and seems quite happy with it. He had doubts regarding the quality of the Makita motor over the Dewalt. Any input on that idea? Thanks again.

Jon FWIW. I use to work for Makita back in late 80's and 90's. i still think that there products are made better that Dewalt tools. Yes Dewalt has some good products left over from the Industrial days , but thats how far I give them credit for good tools. One thing I know for sure Makita MAKES all their motors for there tools ( even the ones in China , Brazil and where ever else they have manufacturing plants) they do not out source motors from other manufactures to build there motors. If you ever look in their catalog , they tell you the quality that goes in to their motors. Makita started out as a motor company first, than started to make tools to fit around their motors. Good luck. Make sure that when you purchase your tool, it can be warranted by the company that you are purchasing from, that goes for all tools, better yet an authorized service dealer for the products they sell.
Ben,
Thanks for the input. That is very helpful.
I have had a 3365 for two years now I think. I like it, it'll go from a 16th to a 64th with a twist of the foreknob. The dust bag tends to get in the way tho'. I have found that over the year(s) that it has a noticeable "lean" & to the lean, meaning that it'll take off more on the left than center or right. If your not careful it'll surprise you. Its been a good tool, but now it has a few dings in the blade, so time to resharpen or purchase a new blade. I bought it as a recon tool, fm amazon.com and their tool crib.
