If so, then I’m wondering if any of you know anything about Palo-escrito wood (Dalbergia paloescrito)? It’s native to mexico and used a lot there in making guitar backs and sides. It is a member of the Rosewood family and reddish brown in color .
I had a neighbor give me some of the wood (his last piece) and I used it to make handles for 6 of my lathe chisels. Absolutely beautiful stuff. I need some more! Web searches has turned up no sellers of it. It apparently is very rare.

Mike,
Cocobolo Inc. might be able to help:

They don't list Dalbergia paloescrito as a wood they stock, but they deal in Mexican woods and may have access to it. They were able to direct me to sources of woods they don't regularly stock.

Yes I am a luthier. Try http://www.lmii.com . I have purchased Palo Escrio sets from them and they may have thicker wood too. Personally, I use cherry for all of my file and chisel handles.
Check out the musical instrument makers forum. I think it is http://www.mimf.org or .com
