My wife has decided that it’s time to update the old college-era dining table with a proper-sized one. She would like it to be made from antique pine. Trouble is, I’m having a devil of a time finding a lumberyard that sells antique or reclaimed pine lumber that hasn’t been cut into strips for flooring. I live in MA (Franklin). Anyone know of a place that sells this locally (I’m willing to drive some) or a decent, reputable mail order place?
Thanks.

Johnniev,
If you go through a good sized stack of 5/4 western pine at a lumber yard you should, with luck, find several tight grained, noticably heavier, boards that came from trees that grew more slowly than most. This wood will be pretty much the equivalent of antique pine and is a joy to work with.

Thanks-I had that though too, but then maybe I can clarify-this needs to look as though we've had it for a centruy or two, so something more distressed with insect holes and such is desirable. I know I could just distress it myself but I kind or wanted to avoid that.
Thanks again though-I may wind up doing that.
johnniev,
There used to be Duane's over in Quincy...but that was years ago and they are long gone. Most of Duane's stuff came from buildings he had won the contract to demolish in the Boston area. I don't know who is doing the demolishing now...but that would be a possible local source.
You also might go over to NYW and ask Norm to recommend a source...

If you don't get any personal recommendations, give this a try to start your research. Most of them focus on flooring, but some do mention wide stock and larger timbers (appalachianwoods.com for instance).

Try Architectural Timber and Millwork in Hadley, MA. 413-586-3045
I have bought good stuff there, like clear old Chestnut for windows.
